Let's save WHO !!!
Let's save WHO !!!

Yes every so often a new topic comes on board saying the site is going down the pan it's not the same anymore blah blah blah.
Me being an optimist, and with unlimited determination wants to get to the bottom of this problem.
Firstly do people still want to save this site? and secondly if it does, to try and get a resolution.
I'm not asking anybody to put their hand in their pocket (not yet) but to find out how we can move forward it's no good when these topics come up to reminisce about the old days, we know we can't recapture those heady days of WHO but I'm sure there is still life in the old girl yet, surely a quick wash and brush up and a new lick of paint and she will keep going for a few years yet.
So we need to engage with North bank to see how we can help in trying to keep it going as I understand it, our first problem is that admin whoever he maybe has naffed off with the keys I have limited knowledge of this problem, but with the wealth of knowledge out in WHOland I'm sure somebody can come up with a solution.
So if North Bank could lay out clearly what needs to be done then I am willing to co-ordinate or project manage issues or if there is no way forward, do we let WHO die with an uannounced 404 popping up on our screens? or do we all say our goodbyes and let North bank switch off the lights and we all trot off elsewhere?

So first port of call is to North Bank, if he can let us know where we stand and what practically can be done.

I wasn't aware that it needed saving as such.. Thought it just bumbles along quite nicely... Is there any way to identify the "footfall" on the site to see if its still worthwhile and what income does it get if any from advertising...

Re: Let's save WHO !!!
I kind of like it exactly as it is.

Re: Let's save WHO !!!
In fact having rechecked there is no advertising appearing anymore... When did that stop..?

Re: Let's save WHO !!!
As I understand it North Bank is paying for the upkeep of the server and because admin have gone AWOL there is no advertising and the site can't survive on fresh air and no upgrades can be done.

I guesstimate that we presently have 30-40 regular users.

I suggested doing a podcast with WHOers and a guest but my idea went down like a lead balloon.

In this day and age you need content to drive people to your site. Articles, podcasts, videos etc.

I'm up for helping, Charlie. I've been here nearly 25 years and would hate to see it die.

Couldn't we just close this one down and build another one? I'm sure we have some web developers on here.

Re: Let's save WHO !!!
When defjam was last on here he didn't paint a pretty picture for it's survival. My whole point including your one Alfs re: podcast new blood etc coming on to the site is that unless we know the problem we can't solve it and without going round in circles again, the site needs people on here to survive and it seems to dying a slow natural death. New ideas are not coming forward because the site is going nowhere. It's no good moaning lets get things moving

Alfs not familiar with cost and how practical it is to set up a new one.

Re: Let's save WHO !!!
After one of North Bank's regular whinges about 'bankrolling the site so you cunts can argue about x' I made an offer to help. It wasn't received well.

I dont think Northy wants the help. And that's fair enough.

What's this about an admin running off with the keys? Sounds weird.

Re: Let's save WHO !!!
Vexed site admin set up the site and as I understand it he is the only person who has access and he has disappeared off the face of the earth

Who were admin? What was their role? And what gaps have they left?

I am a web developer but last did php about 20 years ago (Perl also does my head in) so probably not much help on that front. The big issue is migrating the old data to a new platform. Data storage is dead cheap now but I imaging the current setup us lurking on an antiquated server somewhere at little cost and it does the job if a bit sluggish on match days.
I would be willing to put my hand in my pocket for old times' sake as I have been on here for yonks and even though I don't post much will miss it more than I should.

Re: Let's save WHO !!!
Whether or not anybody agrees, to outsiders, we're a bickering clique (that means ALL of us), with constant internal references and casual profanity that would make a sailor blush.

From our point of view, there's nothing wrong with that - even the whingiest of whingers keeps coming back with the same old whinge - but to an outsider/newcomer, knowing where to even begin to try to work out how to ease into the site must be a task too much (witness the number of new users who actually last a week or more after their first post).

I'm sure many who stumble across or who are introduced to the site can see that (most of us) are comfortable in the site and it's style and even then, deciding to join, when they try to ease in, they are soundly "cunted in the bastard", often by the "usual subjects" just having "a bit of banter". Not that hard to see why they stick with other social media platforms.

We need to find a way that new posters can ease their way in without diluting the uniqueness a good "cunting in the bastard" delivers. We're not at the polishing a turd stage, where no amount of modern glitter & fizz makes a difference, but, if we don't want to die a cliquey slow death, we need to find a solution.

Mike

Though there are some exchanges that rapidly become boring, the tolerance of cunting in the bastard is the most precious feature of this site. Never more than these last few years or so.

I cherish freedom of speech with a passion. It’s the closest thing the little man has to tanks and nukes, and there can’t be many free-er forums than WHO.

Perhaps new users should be presented with a welcome sign when they join up, that as briefly as possible gets across what we all know: that despite the unfiltered earthy language, and often venomous humour, pretty much everyone is pretty decent folk and love West Ham. A fair warning.

I’d hate WHO to be too safe. We’ve already got that in abundance all over all media.
